Jaimee, the sweet owner of Modern Classics Kids, designs stationery for all of your needs. From note cards, gifts tags, and even recipe cards you can surely find what you are looking for. This mom and wife is able to juggle running her own business and help a friend with their dog walking business with ease. So let’s meet this talented lady, shall we?

Tell us about yourself.
My name is Jaimee McClellan and I’m one happy gal! I live in good ol’ PA with my wonderful husband {my Shop Side-kick} and my son {my favorite new Kindergartener}. I grew up in NJ with quite the artistic family…my father the photographer and my mother who can create just about anything she puts her mind to. So, needless to say, it’s in the genes. I followed in my High School Art Teacher’s footsteps and attended her alma mater, Kutztown University where I graduated with a BFA focused in Textiles ~ Only after attempting every medium first…sculpture, oils, photography, ceramics! Funny, though, my loom has been collecting dust in our basement for the past 6 years.
How and why did you create your business?
I created my business basically on a whim and with the coaxing of friends and family. I can never sit idle and am constantly creating. While it’s fun to make things for yourself, I find much more pleasure in creating for others. I started giving away all my goodies and while I always got a “Thank you so much!” and also got “You should sell this!” So, I gave it try and here I am pleased as punch to have the opportunity to get my work out there among the masses and having fun in the process.

Describe a typical work day for you.
These days, I’m on a new schedule…with the little guy starting school. After getting him on the bus, it’s time to check the emails and custom requests. With a cup of tea and pastry in hand, I head to the studio/former nursery!
I print, package and ship usually all before noon and then it’s off to job #2 which surprisingly enough, I thoroughly enjoy. I’ve recently taken up helping a friend with her dog-walking business. I got so many chuckles when telling people I’m a dog-walker but it’s the perfect time to unwind, clear my mind, get some exercise AND get paid all at the same time. My newest venture is about to begin this next month. I’ve been contracted to do some of my old Marketing work which should be fun. I just have to figure out how I’m going to accomplish it all in a day. We shall see…I’m always up for a challenge!

Why did you choose the form of paper to express yourself?
Basically, I’m a “Font Nut” and LOVE Children’s Illustrations. I could spend hours, days, weeks…in a library just reading children’s books. Something just appeals to me in the asthetics of books and paper, the feel the smell – I LOVE IT!
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Of course, I’m inspired by all things artistic…I love museums, galleries, and perusing all the fantastic artists on Etsy!
(You can even see a few of their works posted around my studio). A lot of my work is based on things I loved in my childhood. Books, toys, fabrics I remember from when I was little and how the colors and designs made me feel. I’m drawn to soft colors and crisp delicate lines. Simplicity is perfection for me.

What are your favorite hobbies?
That’s a funny question because my work was and is my hobby. I’m an advide baker…just ask my neighbor ~ living with two boys withOUT a sweet tooth, I’m forced to share with my neighbors just to keep my figure![]()
Oh, and I’m not sure if it’s a hobby but a girl always love to SHOP too!!!
